| 'Vijja' means 'seeing clearly'... |
| This site takes its name from among a family of cognate terms derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *weyd, "to see, to know": vision (Old French) > visio, videre (Latin); wisdom, wit, witness (Old English) > *wisaz, *witjan, *witanan (Proto-Germanic); fios (Irish & Scots Gaelic); vidya (Sanskrit); vijja (Indian Prakit). In the Pāli Buddhist texts, vijja, "clarity", is contrasted with avijja, which includes the sorts of intellectual confusion susceptible to philosophical clarification, as well as more deeply-rooted delusions. |
